Denis Wren Mulherin passed away November 21, 2021, after a short illness at home in Santa Ana, CA
Denis was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania to Joseph Harold Mulherin and Marion Wren Mulherin, the eighth of nine children. As a child, Denis excelled in school, and became a National Merit Scholar. He graduated with Honors from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and earned his PH. D in Theoretical Physics at Fordham University. He met his beloved wife Sharon in New York City, and they married at the Fordham University Chapel in 1968.
After teaching college-level physics, Denis settled in Tustin, California and worked as a Senior Scientist at Hughes Aircraft. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Sharon and his friends. He was a voracious reader of science fiction, but also of philosophy and religion. He loved spirited discussions with his family, where his deep kindness and gentle humor were loved by all.
A devout Catholic, Denis supported multiple charities. He spent time volunteering at Isaiah House, a Catholic Worker Charity to help families in Orange County. He loved bringing cookies and treats to brighten up everyone’s day.
Denis leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Sharon, his daughters Diana (Carter Taylor) and Amy (Antonio Hachem) and four grandchildren. He is survived by two brothers, Brian Christopher and Girard Michael. He is proceeded in death by three brothers, Francis, Joseph and Paul, and three sisters, Joan, Carol and Thelma.
Visitation with be held at Saddleback Chapel Mortuary on Sunday, December 5th from 5 pm-7 pm. Funeral mass will be held at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Tustin, California on December 6th at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, donations in Denis’ name may be made to Isaiah House, the Orange County Catholic Worker at occatholicworker.org
