Obituary for Joann Cass Coover

On Saturday, October 29, 2022, Joann Cass Coover passed away of natural causes. She was eighty-two. Born to Ignacy and Anna (neé Stankiewicz) Tarczynski in Chicago, she was a first-generation American and spoke Polish as her first language. After graduating from Taft High School in 1958, she did secretarial work and bookkeeping at the Army Corps of Engineers and Union Carbide, where she met chemical engineer Edward Cass. They would marry soon after and relocate to New York, where their four children were born. When they were in school she finished her accounting degree. Ed and Joann were married for forty-three years until his passing.

Joann was married to fellow St. John Neumann parishioner Robert Coover for fifteen years. She joyfully welcomed Bob's three children and their families into her life. She loved being surrounded by a large family.
Joann took great pride in her town of Irvine and was honored to work for the City for seventeen years, living there for forty-five years. She was active in many bridge clubs and organizations, including the Ebell Club of Irvine, the Women’s Club of Irvine, and the parish Women’s Club. She also served as a eucharistic minister and was on the church council. In her spare time she enjoyed reading and needlepoint.

Joann will be missed by her four children: Paul of Irvine; Diane of Tucson; Joseph (Andrea) of Anaheim; and Linda (Clint) of Albuquerque. She is lovingly remembered by her five grandchildren: Jennifer (David), Joseph, Allie (Bailey), Kirstin (Eric), and Julianne. She leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Anne-Marie and Olivia.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday, November 18 at 10am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Irvine, followed by luncheon in the parish hall. Viewing and prayer service are at Saddleback Chapel in Tustin on Thursday at 5pm.
